1971 was a great year in sports. The Baltimore Colts beat the Dallas Cowboys 16-13 in Super Bowl V. The Pittsburgh Pirates won the World Series in 7 games over the Baltimore Orioles. Joe Frazier defeated Muhammad Ali in the first of three bouts to retain the Heavyweight Title. Cycling legend Eddy Merckx won the Tour de France. Jack Nicklaus won the PGA Championship and was the money leader with $244,491. In college basketball, UCLA won the NCAA men's basketball championship 68-62 over Villanova and Bobby Knight was hired at Indiana. In the NBA, the Milwaukee Bucks won the NBA Championship by sweeping the Baltimore Bullets in 4 games. The dominant Nebraska Cornhuskers won college football's AP National Championship by going undefeated and beating #2 Alabama 38-6 in the Orange Bowl.

In American pop culture, Dirty Harry (Clint Eastwood) debuted in 1971 and top television shows that year included All in the Family, Gunsmoke, and the Flip Wilson Show.
