The History of Tiger Stadium
Tiger Stadium was known as Navin Field and located in the Corktown District of Detroit, Michigan. This historic sports stadium opened on April 20, 1912 at the corner of Michigan and Trumball Avenues. The first run scored in the stadium was by infamous "Shoeless" Joe Jackson. By 1938, the stadium capacity had increased to 53,000 and Navin Field became Briggs Stadium. In 1961, the stadium was renamed Tiger Stadium. When it closed in 1999, Tiger Stadium was tied with Fenway Park as the oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball, both having opened on the same day in 1912. Three Major League All-Star games were played at Tiger Stadium. Tiger Stadium was also home to the Detroit Lions NFL team from 1938-1974.
